INTRODUCTION TO PARALEGAL STUDY
This course commences the paralegal profession and the legal system. Topics that are covered include:
- regulations and concepts
- ethics
- case analysis
- legal reasoning
- career opportunities
- certification
- professional organizations and other related topics
After completing the program, students will be able to define a paralegal's role, as well as identify the skills, knowledge and ethics required to be a paralegal.
BASIC LEGAL RESEARCH AND WRITING
The course on Basic Legal Research and Writing introduces various techniques and skills in legal research and writing. Focus is given to finding, studying, practicing, and updating law sources; proper legal writing and citation; and methods of electronic research. After finishing the course, students have learned techniques to help them perform both legal research and writing assignments.
SELECTED TOPICS IN PARALEGAL
A course entitled "Special Topics in Paralegal" focuses on matters of current interest in certain specific program or discipline areas. Primary subject matter focus is centered on program or discipline-appropriate subject matter. The student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the specific area of study, when they come away from this course.
INTERNSHIP IN PARALEGALISM
This course gives the student a chance to work in a paid or unpaid position in which he/she applies paralegal skills and knowledge. The requirements for this course are a minimum of 100 hours of practical experience in the following legal fields; law offices, municipal courts, banks, insurance companies, governmental agencies, and with district and circuit court judges. Students can demonstrate their knowledge in a work environment after completing their PRL program.
