Enroll at Phoenix College Paralegal Program

Associate in Applied Science (Career Program Specified)-Paralegal

The Paralegal Studies Program trains students to gain entry level employment in law offices. Performing specifically delegated, substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible, a paralegal is qualified by education, training, or work experience to work for a law office, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity. In some contexts, paralegals are also called Legal Assistants. The curriculum allows students to develop practical legal skills, allowing them to draft legal documents with little supervision. Students also gain an understanding of fundamental concepts of important areas including torts and business law. In addition, the development of effective written and oral communication skills, team work, critical thinking skills, computer proficiency, and legal research techniques also are emphasized. Throughout the program, legal theory is integrated with related practical sessions. Learning how to avoid the unauthorized practice of law by non-lawyers is but one of the many ethical dilemmas students will learn to handle as a working paralegal. Students enrolled in the Paralegal Studies Program may earn a Certificate of Completion (CCL) or an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. For those students with no prior law-related experience, it is highly recommended that they participate in the internship program to enhance their chances of securing employment upon graduation. A Certificate of Completion (CCL) or an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree may be earned by students enrolled in the Paralegal Studies Program. For official acceptance into the program, you will be required to submit a Verification of Eligibility form. The American Bar Association (ABA) approves the Paralegal Studies Program.
