This evening program, intended for working adults, consists of a 13 course upper division curriculum and can be completed in one year. The program will supply students with coursework that is up to date, and it concentrates on the realistic application of substantive law while promoting critical thinking, ethical conduct and social responsibility.
Paralegals are important and respected members of the legal profession. They work in a quick-paced and professional environment, while benefiting from a high rate of job satisfaction. Paralegals are an important part of the legal system, working directly with attorneys.
Students have the option of applying to the BA Legal Studies at any time, if they are enrolled in the certificate program.
Curriculum
Our curriculum meets the terms of the California Business and Professions code sections 6450 through 6456. These require paralegals to be educated at a qualified institution that offers at least 37 quarter units of legal specialty coursework.
Paralegals can only provide legal advice when directed by an attorney. They may not establish a business relationship with a client, nor may they represent a client in court.
Enrollment Requirements:
In order to be accepted into the program, applicants are required to have at least fifty four transferable college credit units. At least 24 out of the 54 quarter units are required be taken in at least three of the following fields.
- Social and Behavioral Sciences
- English (English Composition is required to be completed with a grade of C or better)
- Foreign language
- Mathematics
- Humanities
- Natural or Physical Science
Introduction to Law/Paralegal Studies
This course presents students with an overview of the American legal system and familiarizes students with an assortment of legal fields and topics. Emphasis will be placed on legal vocabulary. The course will provide the students with a basic understanding of the paralegals role in the work setting. It will also focus on the numerous regulations and ethical guidelines that pertain to the duties of paralegals.
