Los Angeles City College is a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education
The Paralegal Studies program is presented by the Law Department to students who are attracted in a career as an employee in a law office or courthouse to aid in the execution of legal services in civil and criminal matters. It is also beneficial to people who wish to gain employment in fields like real estate, insurance, banking, or brokerage. There is a great need for legal services within our society; combine this with a shortage of lawyers to fulfill this need and the legal system is presented with a demand for qualified assistants, such as can be found in the dental and medical fields.
A paralegal is a trained , qualified person, who has acquired knowledge either through training at school or on the job, who is hired and under guardianship of a lawyer or law office, such as in a corporate situation, government agency or other circumstance, who will carry out the lawyers' responsibilities in the form of certain delegated legal work. Paralegals only provide legal services directly to the public as permitted by law.
According to the latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor, it is projected that the field of Paralegals and legal assistants are going to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012. Legal staff are hiring paralegals more now, than ever before, in order to lower their costs and increase the availability and efficiency of their legal services; this has contributed directly to general employment growth. Most of job openings for future paralegals are going to be additional jobs created by employment growth, but new job openings will arise as people leave their jobs. Although rapid job growth is expected, competition will also increase as more people enter the profession. However, those paralegals with excellent skills and formal training should have excellent career prospects. Although this program can't promise a job, we do our best to help students find legal work.
The on-campus Law Club welcomes all students who are enrolled in the Law/Paralegal program to join. Los Angeles City College is proud to be an upstanding member of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE). We encourage paralegal students to become involved locally in the AAfPE.
