The Legal Studies/Paralegal certificate program is intended to develop and enhance the skills and understanding desired to fill responsible positions in banks, insurance companies, real estate companies, private law offices, corporate law offices, and local, state and federal government legal departments. The Legal Studies/Paralegal Certificate program is a certified member of the American Association for Paralegal Education. Throughout the courses in the program, the topic of ethics and the paralegal's role in the legal profession are emphasized. For the completion of the Legal Studies/ Paralegal Certificate Program, eight courses are needed.

Students who have successfully completed all of the program's requirements will be able to:

  • Graduates will learn how to not only conduct interviews but to put them in precise, concise legal format for analysis.
  • Including Trial Court and Appellate Court functions, respectively, explain the structure of the State and Federal Court system.
  • Recognize historical, sociological and political trends that have changed, and continue to change, the American legal system.
  • Students will need to be able to explain the role of forensic science as they relate to evidence in civil and criminal litigation.
  • To identify all legal issues, research a particular fact pattern and describe the competing arguments that can be advanced to controversy by parties involved.
  • The judiciary in providing a balance to the legislative and executive functions of government, is the role that has to be explained.
  • Identify the difference between damage and liability issues in legal disputes.
  • As a tool of social justice, it is very important to identify inherent restrictions in the civil and criminal legal process that inhibit the ability of the legal system.
  • Your goal is to identify and present a logical plan for a client, taking into account the strengths and weaknesses of adopting various legal positions.
  • Financial data regarding the client's case file must be maintained in an organized fashion.
  • Facilitate positive relations between the law firm, department, or public entity and the clients served.
  • Organization in handling multiple client case files and maintain strict docket control must be demonstrated for timely case file review.
  • You will come to understand conflict resolution in both theory and practice.
  • Wherever appropriate, you will apply both common law and statutory principles.
  • Recognize fundamental tort and contract principles that are experienced in different areas of the law.
