Upon completion of Norwalk Community College's degree or certification program requirements, graduates will be able to:
- Show reasoning and skill in the application of legal concepts as needed in the day to day operation of a law office
- The graduate will also understand the ethics of being a legal paraprofessional
- Put into practice basic knowledge from social sciences, arts, literature, science and mathematics to understand and create solutions to the problems that come about in the legal field
- Obtain, organize and present information effectively both in writing and orally
- Research legal issues through computers or utilizing the traditional manners, to be able to identify applicable statutes, regulations and case law
- Demonstrate the writing skills that are deemed necessary to work in an office of law
- The gathering of information and interviewing of clients and witnesses in a way that is meaningful in support of the particular casework.
- Real estate closing documents such as deeds, mortgages, settlement statements and title insurance binders are prepared after understanding them thoroughly
- Collect information and prepare estate inventories and inheritance tax forms or prepare court documents for divorce and other family law proceedings
- Obtain knowledge about the process involved in trial and draft and then reply to complaints and other pleadings and discovery documents.
- Comprehend the administrative process and how to interact with administrative agencies and respond to requests for information by various entities and to get administrative claims ready for filing
- Understand various business organizations and how to generate documents for their establishment, incorporation or organization
- Knowing and understanding functions and benefits of membership in local and national paralegal associations will greatly benefit you
- You must possess eligibility requirements for taking the Certified Legal Assistant Examination, also known as the CLA which is a private and non-mandatory certification by the NALA, or National Association of Legal Assistants
- A successful career of a paralegal can be achieved by displaying great ability to work in law office and requisite traits and attitudes
