Edison College

The Paralegal Studies program is aimed at students who wish to work as paraprofessionals in the legal profession. Students are trained in many diverse areas of law.

Areas of study include research and writing, such laws as real estate, criminal, and family, as well as, wills , trusts, torts, and litigation. The American Bar Association has given their approval to the Edison College Paralegal Studies Program.

Program graduates will be professionals who can manage law office operations, carry out many routine duties of attorneys and directly help lawyers in dealing with legal problems. Other roles that they fill might include legal research, developing new procedures, and drafting documents.

Representing one self as a lawyer is not allowed if you're a paralegal or legal assistant. Graduates of the Edison Associate in Science degree program in Paralegal Studies may not practice law, take the bar examination, or represent themselves as attorneys.

The American Bar Association definition of a paralegal or legal assistant as: A person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is working for or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, government agency or other entity and who carries out specifically related substantive legal work for which a lawyer is directly responsible.

You should take electives that qualify for university transfer if you intend to continue your education and pursue a Bachelor's degree.
