Gain a successful career in the paralegal field
The bachelor of science degree in paralegal studies is accepted by the American Bar Association. The American Bas Association states the definition of a paralegal as being, "a person qualified by education, training, or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity, and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible." The objective of the program is to train students for entry-level paralegal position in the common areas of law practice. Paralegals are not authorized to practice law because they are not attorneys. This program will not meet the needs of those desiring to train as lawyers or legal administrators, instead focusing strictly on paralegal training. Prior to receiving their bachelor of science degree in paralegal studies, students must undergo an exit interview with the program coordinator and submit a paralegal portfolio.
The Paralegal Studies Program objectives are as follows:
- Students will be provided with a broad-based education in both liberal arts and paralegal studies
- Provide paralegal courses that help students gain substantive legal knowledge and analytical skills, and use the knowledge they have gained to tasks regularly performed by paralegals
- Be responsive in course offerings, as they pertain to the needs of paralegals and attorneys
- Make certain that students know the ethical guidelines for paralegals
- The opportunity to utilize software that is used in most offices dealing with law-related issues are provided to students
- Students will learn about the paralegal profession and related job opportunities
