Harper College
Gain a successful career in the paralegal field
The 63 credit-hour program is designed to transform men and women into technically qualified assistants to a lawyer. When a paralegal is given the opportunity to work for an attorney, the paralegal has the capacity to perform such functions as legal research, investigation, detailed jobs with regard to probate matters, preparation of tax forms and returns, searching public and court records, office management, library service, bookkeeping, serving and filing legal documents and preparing legal forms, almost everything a lawyer can do except give legal advice, defend or prosecute. Designed especially for experienced individuals, this 21 credit-hour certificate program will greatly benefit those who are currently employed, or are searching for a position, in the legal field.
The numerous choices we offer give the student the chance to develop exceptional skills and interests.
Students must have a bachelor's degree which include general education courses equivalent to those required in Harper College's associate in applied science degree in paralegal studies, an associate in applied science degree, or an associate in arts degree to receive a certificate in Paralegal Studies. Before awarding the certificate, the degree must be verified. After completing the 21 credit-hour certificate program, students may use a computerized employment placement service and work as paralegals for practicing attorneys. Students should be conscious of the fact that there are legal limitations on the practice of law by laymen. For students who are electing to get a certificate in paralegal studies, they will be eligible to apply the credits that they have earned toward a completed associate degree in applied science.
