Program Information: With a curriculum usually lasting two years, the Paralegal program at Illinois Central College is a course of study that will lead to an Associate in Applied Science degree. The current curriculum includes courses in law and law-related fields of study along with general education courses. The goal of the program is to create competent, well-rounded individuals who are able to work under the supervision of an attorney in the many practices of law. Students are enabled to perform legal work delegated by an attorney, such as client interviews, investigations, legal research, and preparation of legal documents. Paralegals are employed by private law firms, corporations, government agencies, insurance companies, title companies, and financial institutions.
This program has been approved by the American Bar Association.
Computers are a very important part of this career. The student should be knowledgeable with the keyboard. In cases where the student has no keyboarding skills, an additional keyboarding class is recommended. For students who have successfully earned either a bachelor's or associate's degree, the Paralegal Certificate Program provides educational training for aspiring certified paralegal professionals.
To be admitted to the program, an applicant must have either a bachelor degree (4 years/undergraduate) or an associate degree from an accredited college or university. The objective of this program is to produce competent, well-rounded individuals who are able to work under the supervision of an attorney in the many areas of law practice. Legal research, client interviews, investigations, preparation of legal documents, and other legal work are delegated by legal staff and the student is developed to prepare and perform these tasks. Private law firms, corporations, government agencies, insurance companies, title companies, and financial institutions employ paralegals. Students should enroll in the Paralegal Associate in Applied Science degree if they do not have a 2 or 4 year degree. American Bar Association has approved this program.
