Become a paralegal specialist at Macomb Community College
The courses in the Legal Assistant Program will be designed to ready a student for a career with responsibilities that include relieving an attorney from the portions of legal practice which require routine legal processes. The student will be able to assist and work under the control and supervision of an attorney upon completion of this program, but must not practice law or give legal advice.
Goals for Students in the Legal Assistant Program:
- Understand the ethical and professional responsibilities that come with being a part of a professional legal service delivery team
- Be prepared to conduct legal research, accurately prepare legal forms and documents, comprehend the purpose and function of legal pleadings, and conduct and summarize factual investigations
- Know the purpose and function of, as well as utilize electronic evidence
- Understand substantive law in the areas of family law, wills and estates, real estate, administrative law, bankruptcy, court procedure, and business organizations including corporations
- Should show proficiency in related courses in general education, business law, accounting, communications, mathematics, office management, keyboarding and computer information
A minimum of 15 semester hours must be completed at Macomb to receive the Associate of Applied Science degree in Legal Assistant from Macomb Community College. Legal Assistant specialty classes must make up at least 10 of those 15 semester hours. Credits for prior learning can get you up to 6 semester hours of legal specialty courses
The Associate of Applied Science degree in the Legal Assistant Program is approved by the American Bar Association
