Enroll at Winona State University Paralegal Program

The Paralegal Program provides students the opportunity to develop both intellectual and professional skills in the field of law. The program is designed to fulfill the needs of students who desire to enter a career field that demands knowledge and experience with legal systems and institutions. Careers working for law firms, government agencies, insurance companies, banking institutions, and more are included in this. It can also help a person get ready for law school.

The WSU Paralegal Program is one of only a handful of American Bar Association(ABA) approved four-year Paralegal Programs in the nation. Every seven years this program is subjected to a re-evaluation on-site by ABA. The ABA's office at 750 North Lake Shore Dr., Chicago, IL 60611 makes available a report on several Paralegal Programs in the U.S. and their status with the ABA.

This is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Liberal Arts curriculum that will help students improve their skills in investigation, writing and legal research while increasing their knowledge of the history, politics and substance of the law. At the heart of this program is the sequence in classes related to your chosen legal specialty. These teachers of these classes are working attorneys and judges. Students complete a 10-week internship to gain practical experience in paralegal work after these courses. A Paralegal Institute is obtainable each spring. This one-day seminar mainly focuses on a different portion of the paralegal field each year. Professionals employed in various areas of the paralegal field are invited to be speakers. Students attending the Institute can earn a credit for each year of attendance.

The program requires a high school diploma and admission to WSU for admission. Those applicants who were in the top half of their class or who scored at least 20 on the ACT stand a better chance for admission. Advice from Director of the Paralegal Program should be taken by the students who wish to enter the program.
