The Paralegal Studies courses of Mississippi College are designed to educate those wishing to work as legal assistants supervised by attorneys. Suitable positions for graduates are as paralegals in insurance companies, real estate, public utilities, health care, federal and state government agencies, consumer organizations, court systems, legal departments of corporate bodies, banks, private law companies and in the offices of public prosecutors and defence attorneys. Paralegals can also find independent work as contractors in large cities, although they would first require the experience of working as a paralegal in a law firm.

The paralegal program has the following major objectives:

  • To enable a wider range of clients to make use of legal services through a reduction in costs.
  • To promote the development of the paralegal profession.
  • To educate students in the ethics of law and of the legal profession, and enable them to undertake paralegal employment in such areas as govenrnment departments, the legal department of businesses and in other forms of law office.

The program comprises a BSc degree in paralegal studies, and 30-Hour certification available to any student with an existing Baccalaureate degree. Graduates are not licenced by the Paralegal Studies programs to practice law, and state law prohibits them from practicing law without the necessary authorization.
