Defining a Paralegal
Paralegals assist lawyers in the preparations for closings, hearings, trials, and corporate meetings. Paralegals ensure that all relevant information is considered by investigating the facts of the case. Paralegals recognize laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other matters that specifically correspond to assigned cases. After the information is organized, paralegals may prepare written reports that will be used by attorneys in determining how cases should be handled. Paralegals aid in the preparation and organization of the legal arguments, draft pleadings and motions that need to be filed with the court, retrieve affidavits, and help attorneys during the trials. To better assist attorneys, paralegals also manage the filing of case documents.
If you are formally trained, you will have the best paralegal opportunities. Although there are some people that only get their experience from actual workplaces, employers want graduates from postsecondary paralegal education programs.
