The programs of the Paralegal Associate in Applied Science and the Certificate of Proficiency are intended to enable to graduate to pursue a career as a legal assistant, also known as a paralegal. These terms are synonymous for person that qualified by means of education, workplace experience or appropriate training to carry out those functions in a law office that do not require a qualified attorney to complete. Paralegals are typically employed in law offices, government agencies and other entities with a legal department to carry out such tasks involving substantive legal work under the supervision of a qualified lawyer. Such tasks require such legal knowledge that in the absence of the paralegal, the attorney would have to carry out the tasks personally. This is basically what the American Bar Association says of legal assistants.
