The programs of the Paralegal Associate in Applied Science and the Certificate of Proficiency are intended to enable to graduate to pursue a career as a legal assistant, also known as a paralegal. These terms are synonymous for person that qualified by means of education, workplace experience or appropriate training to carry out those functions in a law office that do not require a qualified attorney to complete. Paralegals are typically employed in law offices, government agencies and other entities with a legal department to carry out such tasks involving substantive legal work under the supervision of a qualified lawyer. Such tasks require such legal knowledge that in the absence of the paralegal, the attorney would have to carry out the tasks personally.
