The program of Legal Assistant Studies is designed to train qualified students for employment as a paralegal in the legal profession. A broad background education is provided to the student in a number of different areas of law.
Paralegals are legal professionals qualified to assist attorneys under their supervision, by carrying out many of the tasks not requiring the specific legal qualifications of a licensed attorney. Among these are assisting and interviewing witnesses and clients, drafting of legal documents, analyzing data, supporting litigation and managing cases, investigation and research. Paralegals are employed in areas such as the legal departments of insurance offices, banks, corporations and public agencies, and also in real estate and legal aid and law offices.
Graduates may sit the national certificate examination that the National Association of Legal Assistants offers, and candidates that are successful in this 2 day examination are qualified CLA (Certified Legal Assistants). The AAS Degree in Legal Assistants Studies can be transferred to a BAAS (Bachelor of Applied Science) degree program at this university.
