The Associate of Applied Science degree in paralegal studies prepares students for employment as a paralegal, or legal assistant. Paralegals are paraprofessional members of the legal profession who work in close association with attorneys, public defenders, prosecutors and judges to carry out work for which a full qualification in law is not required. Legal assistants work under the supervision of qualified lawyers investigating facts, interviewing clients and witnesses, researching law and drafting letters and documents. Paralegals carry out a wide range of tasks and functions, some specializing in areas such as corporate law, real estate or civil litigation.
