Gain a successful career in the paralegal field
Legal Assistants and Paralegals are synonymous terms for professionals that help attorneys with predominantly substantive tasks for which it is not necessary in law to be a qualified lawyer to undertake.
Our legal assistant courses provide students with the practical capability, theoretical grasp of law, and the technical competence required to carry out paralegal work in today's world of complex legal issues where a high degree of proficiency in law is essential. There are two degree options offered by this program: the Associate in Applied Science, and the Bachelor of Science degree, both being approved by the American Bar Association, and both providing, not only a range of specialty legal courses, but also a solid background of liberal general education.
Our graduates find employment in many different types of legal department, including those of local, state and federal government agencies, corporations, banks and insurance companies, and also in agencies providing legal provision for the poor and in law offices and courts.
The American Bar Association defines a paralegal or legal assistant in general terms as being qualified by education, training or work experience and they are employed by a government agency, corporation, law office or lawyer or any other entity and who performs substantive work that would normally be carried out by an attorney.
Practical training
The Law and Paralegal Studies Dept. at City Tech possesses a computer laboratory equipped with software for computerized legal research and also a very comprehensive legal library. Graduates who have successfully completed the course will possess the necessary knowledge and skills in legal research and writing, and the computer proficiency needed for employment in today's high technology law offices.
The internships involved in both the A.A.S. and B.S. courses will provide you with practical training and an insight into the day-to-day activities of a modern law office. Situated in the center of Brooklyn's legal community, City Tech is within walking distance of the main law offices and the federal and state courtrooms.
