A paralegal or a legal assistant is a person trained to help and assist attorneys in their legal actions. American Bar Association says that they are "qualified by education, training or work experience who are employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who perform specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible."

This work includes drafting legal correspondence or documents, legal research, handling interviews and case investigation, assisting in lawsuits, working with corporate legal departments, and much more. Pretty much they have to do all the legal work delegated to them by an attorney.

During paralegal training courses the students learn to work in business and industry, real estate, administrative and government work, banking and insurance. More and more industries these days are willing to hire persons with paralegal skills.

Rhodes State College's Legal Assisting Program it is a practical, skill based program approved by the American Bar Association and includes a wide background of legal, general education and business courses.

During the courses the students will learn how to develop their computer skills and will receive information on basic and general knowledge, legal research and writing skills, accounting and business law. While learning all that they will perform specific legal tasks and handling case studies on family law, debt collections and bankruptcy, real estate procedures and title searches, criminal law, and administrative law.

Once the course work is completed, every student will complete an internship in a legal, business, community, or government settings that will help him gain work experience. All this will take place under the supervision of an attorney.
