A legal assistant (which is the same as a paralegal) is someone that has the training, education and experience, that does legal work for a law firm under an attorney's supervision. They don't have the right to practice law, but they do the same things as an attorney, except give legal advice. They will do any type of law that can be done unauthorized, even represent clients.
With a degree in Paralegal Studies taken from the Salt Lake Community College you can prepare to be employed, as you receive a broad-based education. The Paralegal Program is built especially for those that want to work as paralegals, or for those that want to learn more and develop professionally. Plenty of people that go through the Paralegal Program will use it to boost their resume and find jobs in other fields that are not related.
A number of courses that are optional and the general requirements will allow students to train in human relations, written communication and oral communication. Some of these courses are based on group activities so students can train their interactive skills, build ethics and human values.
The Degree
The Paralegal degree lasts for two years and it's an Associate of Applied Science degree. With 18 hours of education from the general requirements and 48 hours of courses that are Program specific, students can qualify for this degree. Out of these, elective hours are 15 and required coursework is another 33 hours. These courses are taught either at the Redwood Road Campus or the Main Street Center.
