Madison Area Technical College has developed a two-year associate degree Paralegal Program that will prepare students for entry-level positions as paralegals (legal assistants). The courses will teach them the basic competencies to start a career as a paralegal.
It is very important for you to know that a paralegal is not authorized to practice law.
Program outcomes established what a student should do with the essential knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors acquired in a specific MATC program.
The graduates of this Paralegal Associate Degree program will develop a critical thinking and will be able to make the right decisions and solve problems respecting the professional ethics. They must know how to use correctly the legal terminology and to communicate effectively both verbally and in written communication. Interpersonal effectiveness is also very important. In addition to all that they must be able to interpret legal citation, research statutes and case law while using a computer and understand the importance of continuing education.
After completing this program they can work as:
- law office paralegal
- corporation paralegal
- public / government paralegal
- trust department paralegal
- real estate paralegal
- or law office manager.
As you may already know, a paralegal that works with a lawyer in a law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and performs substantive legal work for which the lawyer is responsible.
The Paralegal Post Baccalaureate Certificate is certifying that you understand the law office systems and organization and also the state and federal court systems. You know the roles and responsibilities of lawyers and paralegals. You know the differences between civil, criminal and administrative procedures. You can use the correct legal terminology while interviewing a client or conducting an investigation, you can organize facts and evidence, prepare legal documents and comply with all the rules on unauthorized practice of law.
