A Paralegal or a legal assistant is a well-trained person, employed by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency, or other entity who performs substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.
Paralegals are prohibited from practicing law but any graduate of this program will be able to work under the supervision of a lawyer in several settings. They can find a job in a private law firm, insurance companies, corporations, private business and even banks.
At Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, the Paralegal Associate Degree is offered in the day and in the evening and will last for two years (four semesters). You can choose between full- and part time completion options and at graduation you must have 66 credits.
Once graduated, a student must be able to
- understand the law office systems and organization
- the state and federal court systems
- identify the responsibilities of paralegals and lawyers
- compare civil, criminal, and administrative procedures and all that by using the current legal terminology.
He must know how to
- interview a client
- conduct an investigation or legal and factual research
- organize facts and evidence
- use the correct citation form
- and comply with the rules regarding authorizes appliance of law.
